C.B.T Compulsory Basic Training and direct access motorcycle training in Newark, Nottinghamshire

CBT Compulsory Basic Training

All new licence holders, must take a CBT, even for a moped.
You will need BOTH parts of your driving licence (photocard and paper counterpart) to be able to attend the course.

If you need to apply for a provisional licence you can do so online at www.direct.gov.uk/motoring or get an application form (D1) from the Post Office.

The CBT course will take a whole day, although it might take less or more time as it depends on your ability.

It is recommended that a basic knowledge of the Highway Code is obtained prior to attending a CBT course, especially for those with no prior eperience of riding or driving on the roads. An online version of the Highway Code can be viewed at
www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/Motorcyclists

The CBT Course Syllabus includes five elements that have to be completed:

  • Element A – Introduction
  • Element B – Practical on-site training
  • Element C – Practical on-site riding
  • Element D – Practical on-road training
  • Element E – Practical on-road riding

When all five elements have been completed satisfactorily a Certificate of Completion D196 will be issued.

Once the CBT has been completed it is valid for two years and entitles you to ride a 50cc scooter from the age of 16 or a 125cc motorcycle from the age of 17. It allows you to ride unaccompanied with L-plates front and rear, but you cannot use a motorway or carry a pillion.

If you wish to take the CBT on a geared motorbike, you will ideally need to have some experience of riding a geared bike in order to reach the required standard(i.e. be able to move off and stop safely and change gear). We would therefore recommend an hour basic motorcycle training before booking your CBT.

C.B.T Compulsory Basic Training

Direct Access Motorcycle Test Training

You must be 21 years or over to take the direct access course and it is the route to a full motorcycle licence.

Once you have passed the theory test and completed compulsory basic training (CBT) you can go on to do the direct access motorcycle training on a 500cc motorbike. A pass allows you to ride any size of bike.

The Motorcycle Test now consists of two modules:
Module 1 is conducted at the test centre contains the specified manoeuvres element of the test including exercises designed to assess the riders ability to control their motorcycle safely.
Module 2 is the on-road riding assessment

All courses include bike hire, helmets, gloves and water proofs (if required)

Also available: Taster Sessions for complete beginners; Refresher Lessons for the “born again biker”
